This one is for The Paint and Draw Challenge if you go to it you will see the original photograph and the submissions of other artists. We were supposed to have lost edges. It was a good exercise for me. Compare this to my bowl of fruit below and you will see more defined edges.

Beach Rocks

These are some river rocks that I picked up from a beach in Oregon. I painted them per a request of one of my daughters. This is the first time I ever used acrylics. I love how they dry so quickly on the rock but I hate how quickly it dries on my palette.

I Break for Tea

This is this week's challenge for DPW we were supposed to paint our favorite mug. Since no photo was supplied I took my stuff outside into the sun and set up my own composition. I had never done that before! I enjoyed playing around with the objects. I then took a photo and printed it off and begun to paint. I LOVE tea and this is one of my favorites, Peachberry Jasmine Sutra which has a lovely color and smell. The big mug allows me to stick my face in it and smell it as well as taste it.

This was for the DPW Challenge. The challenge was to get the values correct. We were given a black and white photo and told to paint it then check our own painting in black and white to see if we got it right. I think I got the values pretty close .

I am still working on my portraits. I like working with watercolor pencils and a Niji water brush when doing portraits. They offer more control than the normal watercolors. I think of them as training wheels almost. I made a mistake by using a black pen for out- lining, oh well live and learn.

This is my submission for the Rookiepainter Challenge. The original photo showed all the pitchers lined up in a row. I decided, like some of the other artists, to change the composition. This is the first time I used the Masque pen. I need to work on either painting larger pictures or controlling the amount of fluid that comes out of the pen.

Reflecting on Apples

Apples are one of my favorite subjects. I don't know why. This is for The Rookie Painter Challenge. I was upset about the line through the top apple. I did not realize that this paper had another drawing on the other side of it until it was too late. When the paper got wet it showed through and unfortunately dried that way too. .The other picture on the pack was an oil pastel that had stuck the next page to it so I did not notice. Lesson learned! Alas I will not submit it, but you can go look at the others if you want.

This is in response to the Paint and Draw Together Blog Challenge hosted by Lela Stankovic who has been a wonderful virtual teacher to me . Not to say that I have mastered it by any means. I know I have a lot to learn and that is part of the fun. She challenged us by giving us a photo with nothing but a gray background and she asked us to use aerial perspective. I had no idea what this meant but she took time to explain it to me and gave me some examples. Now I at least know what it is and here is my attempt at it.

This is my submission to the Paint and Draw Together Challenge 13. I just realized I missed the deadline by two days! Dang! Take a look at the original photo if you have time and let me know what you think. The flower was added at the end because the original photo reminded me of a Salvador Dali . So I know that he liked to float things in the sky so I thought I'd try it. The flower is a xerox copy,cut out from the painting I did last month. So with or without? I have not glued it on yet.

Plentiful Pomegranates

It all started with reading the novel, Traveling with Pomegranates By Sue Monk Kidd and her daughter Ann Kid Taylor. Which was a very good book by the way, about a mother and daughter's traveling journey as they find there way through life together. Anyway after reading this book I saw pomegranates everywhere. When I saw that it was this month's challenge for Paint and Draw Together I knew I had to do it!

I did this watercolor for The Rookie Painter Challenge. I tried to do it in the style of my favorite watercolorists Belinda Del Pesco. I have a lot to learn. When I finished it the blanket reminded me of waves and I thought that that was appropriate for the restless nights of my sleeping on some days.

I painted this watercolor for the Paint and Draw Together Challenge. The title comes from my husband who always makes this request when we go out to eat. He loves lemons with his ice tea and one wedge just isn't going to do it, especially with refills!

An Apple Tribute

Last week I went to pick the apples off my tree in my backyard only to discover that they had already been plucked and were nowhere to be seen! I suspect a squirrel, maybe a whole clan of squirrels. Oh well, they have to eat too and they can't go to the grocery store like I can. So when I saw this challenge on the Paint and Draw Together blog I knew I wanted to participate.

This is a colored pencil sketch of my Father-in-Law who passed away this Spring. We will miss his positive attitude this Thanksgiving as we all gather together with my husband's family. He would be happy to know that his Bruins are doing so well this year.
The second one was achieved by wetting and blending the pencils.

This painting was done for yet another online painting challenge called A Day Not Wasted. It was the first watercolor that I have done for the ADNW and it is the first one I have done in my new Moleskin book and using a scanner instead of a camera. So it took a while just to figure out all these new things. But it was worth it. I loved the reference photo by Lee and all the other submissions are so beautiful.

Czech Republic

It is truly amazing to me that the month my daughter is to travel to the Czech Republic is the same month that the Virtual Paintout has decided to go there via Google! It has been a busy week. My father-in- law passed away a couple of weeks ago and Friday was his funeral. His name was Dean and he was almost 88 years old. He was the most optimistic person you could ever meet. I got to know a cousin of my husband,Loie. She also likes to paint and we have both agreed to try and paint more. I hope she will join the Monthly Sketch Project too.

Okay so I was doing this painting and it felt very blah at first so I had a moment of temporary insanity and went slap happy with the brush. I had just got done watching 3 episodes back to back of American Idol ,since I got behind watching the Olympics and with the first version of this painting Simon was saying this,"This painting is so dull ,spice it up next time. " So I did, now I don't know if he'll like it or tell me it looks like his Grandmother's wallpaper. I kinda like it myself.

This is from a photo I took while visiting Descanso Gardens in La Canada a few years ago. It is such a beautiful place. A must visit for all artists if you are near Glendale,California. I was influenced by an artist exhibit I saw of Frances Gearhart, an amazing woman artist from California from the Arts and Craft period. She did block prints and watercolor.

I used a water pen and watercolor pencils to do this. I think it will be a good medium to take with me when I travel.

I found this to fun and difficult at the same time. But that is the way to learn right?

This is for the Monthly Sketch Project. I hope you find it mooving. The reference photo was taken by Chrissy, thanks for the inspiration. I had been reading The Yellow House by Martin Gayford, a biography of Vincent Van Gogh (an excellent book) and the reference photo reminded me of him for some odd reason. So I attempted to paint it like his portraits. I'm not sure if I am finished with it yet. But it was fun, maybe a bit too cartoonish though.

Rose's Friend, the Bottle

Well, this has been cropped a ton. The original photo by Leslie Hawes was very beautiful but my shadow turned out murky and the bottle looked awfully lonely without his shadow so I gave him a new friend from my garden instead. This is for the Monthly Sketch Project Blog. Check it out and join us.

California Hills

This was painted for the Following the Masters Challenge. I had such a wonderful time loosing myself in the process of trying to paint in the style of Vincent van Gogh. I was inspired by the Olive Trees in the Alpilles (pictured above my painting) but I used a reference photo of mine to loosely paint the hills by my house. Maybe I should go back and make the olive trees look more like oak trees?

This is a modern approach to roof lines in San Francisco. It was for the Different Strokes from Different Folks challenge. The original photo was a challenge. It was very busy and washed out so I stepped out of my comfort zone and used the colors that I think of when I think of San Fransisco. The sky and the bridge colors for example.

Wow ! I've been away for a long time. Just got my oldest daughter settled in beautiful Portland,Oregon. Sorry honey but your old room is now becoming my new art studio (with a bed). This flamingo was watercolored on a card so that I can give it to a wonderful lady who has been a guide when I needed one. Thank you Marylou.

This is my submission for Different Strokes From Different Folks. I needed to do something quick, I had been out of town but really wanted to try this. I wanted to do something abstract and quick. I was kind of going for a feeling rather than an exact representation. I had a lot of fun just spacing out on it, I took off my glasses and did a lot of squinting.

This is my entry for the May Virtual Sketch Date. It is an 8 x 10 oil. I am pretty happy with it . It is only the second portrait painting I have ever done. The first one was very comical . This doesn't count the endless doodles I do on the unsuspecting people during church service. (my secret is out!) I pray that these sisters will forever remain as close as they appear in the reference photo.

This is my second attempt. I definitely like it better. I am so used to playing with watercolors that sometimes I am afraid to put on as much paint as I really should when doing oils.

This is my entry for Different Strokes from Different Folks. It is an 8 x 10 oil. One of the things I love about New York is the bright colors against the drab colors of the skyscrapers. One of the things I dislike is the noise of the honking horns of the taxis, but that is what ipods are for.

Winter Blues

One of my favorite things to do is to watch the sparrows and finches at our bird feeder. Sometimes even a couple of doves will dine on the offerings. This watercolor for the March Virtual Sketch Date. I focused on just the one bird and added a little bit of snow and berries for color. This is the first time I have used hot press watercolor paper and I must say I love it.
